The signal peak trail is a multi-use trail at the Eagle Lakes exit of I-80. The trail is primarily enjoyed by hikers and OHV (Off Highway Vehicle) enthusiasts. From the trail head to the top is approximately 4 miles with 2500ft elevation gain.
The trail head is easy to find down a short and well maintained dirt road. There are vault toilets available.
The first mile is pretty steep with about 1000ft elevation gain. Much of the terrain is small rock and dirt. I passed a group of 4x4's headed up. Ultimately I made it to the top about 10min before they did even though they were able to take some steep shortcuts I didn't want to tackle on foot.
Although the climb was a bit brutal, I was rewarded by great views through the trees along the way.
As I advanced into miles 2-3 the elevation gain was much more mild. There was standing water in some places from resent rains but it was never muddy enough to make passing difficult. The occasional meadow offered a welcomed change of scenery.
The final mile was pretty steep once again, with about 700ft elevation gain. I was getting pretty tired but more amazing views and a glimpse of my destination in the distance kept me going.
After about 2 hours and 40min I finally reached the top! Signal peak, home of the Red Mountain fire lookout sitting at 7,680 ft. Originally constricted out of wood in 1876, it was rebuilt in 1909 into the stone cabin structure we see today. Pictures truly do not due the view justice.
